Man caught trying to sneak rat on flight

A MAN’S devotion to his rat caused him to abandon an international flight when he was discovered at Melbourne Airport trying to sneak his furry friend on board.

The live rat was found on the man when he attempted to take it through the international departures screening point on Sunday afternoon, airport spokeswoman Anna Gillett said.

Ms Gillett said the passenger had wanted to take the rat on board with him.

"The passenger was obviously not allowed to do that, so he chose not to fly without the animal," she said.

She could not confirm the man’s intended overseas destination, but a caller told radio station 3AW yesterday that a man travelling from Melbourne to London was found with a rat down his pants when he went through the body scanner.

Ms Gillett said the Australian Federal Police were called as per usual procedure.

The AFP confirmed federal police attended Melbourne International Airport on Sunday in relation to a person trying to leave the country with a live rat.

Police said the passenger "voluntarily off-loaded themselves from the flight", was not arrested and was allowed to leave the airport.
