Cop held for involvement in journalist’s murder

Russian investigators have arrested a retired police officer on suspicion of organising the 2006 killing of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was gunned down in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building.

The suspected triggerman was arrested in May.

The latest arrest, announced yesterday, still does not address the issue of who might have ordered the killing of Politkovskaya, a sharp critic of the Kremlin and its chosen strongman in Chechnya.

The arrest of retired Lieutenant Colonel Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov was first reported by editors at Politkovskaya’s newspaper, Novaya Gazeta.

Russia’s three news agencies say Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin confirmed the arrest of Pavlyuchenkov, who Markin said was paid to organise the killing.
