Demand for London 2012 tickets exceeds 20 million

Some 1.8 million people have applied for more than 20 million Olympic tickets, 2012 organisers revealed today.

The figure is more than three times the 6.6 million tickets available for UK sports fans for the event.

Around 95% of the applications are from the UK.
London 2012 boss Lord Coe said he was “thrilled with the response”. Track cycling, rhythmic gymnastics, triathlon, modern pentathlon, equestrian (cross country) and both the opening and closing ceremonies were the first events to sell out.

Tickets for these sports will go to ballot, along with most of the sessions in swimming and tennis.

Money will be taken from accounts from May 10 and customers will receive confirmation of which events they will receive tickets for in June.

Those who missed out in their initial application will be given a further opportunity to apply for remaining tickets in June and July.
