Drunken Couple Stomps 61 Year Old Man To Death In Bizarre Late Night Run-In

A drunk couple savagely stomped a 61-year-old man to death after a bizarre run-in on a Bronx street early Saturday, police sources said. Investigators are still piecing together the bloody 1:30 a.m. encounter on E. 138th St. but have taken the couple into custody, police said.

Detectives believe the man and woman – whose names were not immediately released – were coming home in a livery cab after a night of drinking in the north Bronx.
They asked the driver to pull over on a Mott Haven street corner and, as the man negotiated the fare, the woman stepped onto the sidewalk and began talking to passerby Quinton Guerrero, the sources said.

Their conversation quickly turned ugly and the woman "got in the face" of the older man, a police source said.

Her companion then hopped out of the cab and shoved Guerrero, a retired Verizon worker. The couple knocked Guerrero to the ground and started punching him and stomping on his head with their feet, police said.

"I heard fighting and then I heard a loud thump like someone fell on the floor," said Oscar Porrata, who lives on E. 138th St. "I looked out the window and saw someone on the ground unconscious face up."
"I went outside and looked on the ground and it didn’t look like Quinn," said Porrata, 58. "His face was swollen."

Porrata yelled for help and neighbor Pedro Betancourt dashed out to tend to his mortally wounded friend, who was sprawled on the sidewalk next to his cell phone and a spilled pack of cigarettes.
"I ran out in my T-shirt and tried to save him," said Betancourt, 58. "I checked his pulse. He had no pulse."

Guerrero, who died at Lincoln Hospital a short time later, was remembered by neighbors as a lively figure who would strike up conversations with total strangers.

"Quinn was loved by everyone \[and\] he was always well dressed," said Daniel Soto, 33. "Just a great guy to talk to. He will be missed." Investigators are not certain what was said between Guerrero and the woman that sparked the fatal confrontation. The couple were nabbed at the scene after cops were flagged down by the livery driver. Charges are pending, police said.
